High Adventure Leadership – Lessons Learned
Leadership Skills Training is a one-day workshop
for Scouters who have taken the outdoor training programs conducted by the LAAC
District Training staffs and by the High Adventure Team and who desire to
increase their ability to identify and deal with unexpected incidents in the
backcountry. The emphasis is on discussing those skills and actions that are
necessary to conducting safe and enjoyable outdoor activities. Persons
completing this training should have greater confidence in their ability to lead
a High Adventure Program.
The day is broken into segments of about a
half-hour each, with presentations on leadership interspersed with discussions
of case studies and staged situations. The ideas and experiences of each
attendee are solicited. Persons who desire to participate in this program are
expected to have done the following things:

Completed BSA Basic Outdoor
Leaders Training.
·
Completed an Adult Leaders
Backpack Training program.
·
Obtained and read, Outdoor
Leadership - Techniques, Common Sense and Self Confidence, John Graham, The
Mountaineers, Seattle, WA 1997 (available at book and backpacking stores and
on-line).
