2010 ADULT LEADER SNOW AND ICE TRAVEL
Enjoy the challenge of high mountain travel with confidence in your safety and
first-hand knowledge of snow and ice travel techniques. Your judgment and skills
will be sharpened and your knowledge of safe and effective practices for snow
slope travel will allow you to expand your list of places you can reach in the
great outdoors.
The High Adventure Team Snow and Ice Travel Training provides a direct
opportunity for practice in the use of an ice axe. You will use this handy
device for snow travel, rope team relay, arrest techniques and exhilarating
glissades.
This program is conducted in two parts. The
program begins with an indoor seminar at the Los Angeles Area Council Scout
Headquarters on Saturday, 6 November 2010. Check in will begin at 8:00 am
and the program will conclude at 6:00 pm. (Note: The portion of the program
directly related to ice axe use is scheduled for 4:00 to 6:00 pm. Those, and
only those, who have completed the Winter Camping and Travel Training may elect
to skip the 8:00 am to 4:00 pm portion of the Saturday program since it deals
specifically with snow travel.)
The classroom phase will be followed by a required outdoor field trip which is
scheduled for Saturday, 22 January 2011. Insufficient snow on that day will
cause rescheduling.
It is recommended that attendees have prior Adult Leader Backpack Training
and/or some backpack skills and experience. Successful participation at this
course enables the graduate to lead backpacking expeditions and meet the
requirements for the Council High Adventure Awards.
